Tour

The first time you launch FatWatch, it asks for your preferred weight unit, energy unit, and scale precision. FatWatch supports any combination of pounds, kilograms, stones, calories, and kilojoules.

The scale precision should match the precision of the scale you use to weigh-in each day:

  • 0.1 (150.0, 150.1, 150.2, ...)
  • 0.5 (150.0, 150.5, 151.0, ...)
  • 1.0 (150, 151, 152, ...)

The number you select is used to configure the weight picker wheel on the weigh-in screen.

FatWatch will remember your settings and won't ask you to choose again, but if you do want to make a change, you can do so from within the Settings application. (There you can also choose two additional precision settings: 0.2 and 0.05.)

When you're ready to go, step on your scale and tap Weigh-in Now.

Every day, if you haven't weighed in yet, FatWatch will immediately take you to the weigh-in screen.

Since FatWatch remembers your weight, you won't have to scroll the weight picker far to match what you see on your scale.

You can also turn on or off a checkmark to track which days you exercised, or cheated on your diet, or stuck to your diet, or whatever you want it to indicate.

The note field allows you to write a note for that day.

If you miss a day, you can tap Leave Blank to omit weight for that day but still record a checkmark or a note, perhaps to explain why you couldn't weigh-in.

When you're done, tap Save or Cancel to continue to the Log view.

The Log view allows you to examine your entire weight history numerically.

The red or green numbers to the right of your scale weight show Variance: the difference between the scale weight and the moving average. (Note that this is not the same as the change from the previous day's weight; it is a more useful indicator of progress. See "How to interpret +/- numbers in the Log view" for more information.)

You can tap the control at the top to display BMI (Body Mass Index) instead, if you have enabled it on the More view.

Tap any row to go to the weigh-in screen for that date.

Tap Go To to quickly jump to a faraway date without having to scroll all the way there.

The Trends tab computes your energy surplus or deficit over various time spans. If the number is negative, you are burning more than you eat; if it's positive, you are eating more than you burn. You can use these numbers to adjust your diet or exercise plans.

If you have set a goal, FatWatch indicates your progress relative to your goal and predicts when you will reach it.

The Goal tab allows you to set a target weight and estimate when you'll reach it and how hard you'll have to work to get there on time.

Set a Start Date and FatWatch will retrieve your start weight from your weight history.

Change the Goal Date and FatWatch will update the Plan rows to tell you how hard you'll have to work to get there.

Change the Plan, either the energy change per day or the weight change per week, and FatWatch will update the Goal Date accordingly.

If you have enabled BMI monitoring, you can also set a goal by selecting a BMI number.

The More tab contains several extra features.

Turn on Passcode protection to keep your weight history hidden with a four-digit passcode.

Turn on BMI monitoring to color code the weight picker and chart based on the World Health Organization's classifications.

Turn on Wi-Fi Import/Export to transfer your weight history to any PC or Mac on the same Wi-Fi network as your iPhone, using a web browser.

Additional buttons provide one-click access to the FatWatch support website and support email address. I am eager to help you with any problems or answer any questions you may have.

At any time, rotate FatWatch sideways to view your weight history in chart form.

Quickly tap between viewing the past month, past quarter, past year, entire history, or a scrollable month-to-month view.

Your scale measurements from each day are marked in relation to the red moving average line.

If you set a goal, it is represented by the green goal line, so you can compare your progress to it.

Filled-in marks indicate days which were marked with a check.

If you have enabled BMI monitoring, the chart background is shaded based on obese, overweight, normal, and underweight classifications set by the World Health Organization.

If you enable passcode protection, FatWatch will only allow access to your weight history after entering the correct four digit passcode.

To keep the application interface simple, most rarely changed settings are available in the Settings app.

If you've changed your mind, you can change your selected weight unit, energy unit, and scale increment.

Disable Weigh on Launch if you don't want FatWatch to go directly to the weigh-in screen when you launch it.

Disable Shade Weekends and Shade BMI Zones if you want to keep the chart background clean.

Disable Bonjour if you do not want FatWatch to publish its address when you turn on Wi-Fi Import/Export.
